- Letters act as placeholders for numbers we don't know yet
- Ratios describe the fixed relationship between two quantities
- The letter represents a specific value that makes the math sentence true
- To scale a ratio, you must multiply or divide both parts by the same number
- You can replace the letter with a number to test if it fits the 'box'
- Changing only one side of a ratio ruins the 'flavor' or proportion
- Understanding that variables represent unknown values in a mathematical sentence
- Applying ratios to maintain proportions when scaling
- The equals sign means both sides have the exact same value
- Patterns follow a consistent rule like 'add 3' or 'multiply by 2'
- Any change made to one side must be mirrored on the other to keep the 'seesaw' level
