- Ratios can compare two independent groups (part-to-part) rather than just a piece of a total
- The order of numbers in a ratio must match the order of the items being compared
- A ratio of 3:5 is different from a fraction of 3/5 if the 5 represents a second group rather than the total
- A unit rate is found by dividing the first quantity by the second to find the value for '1'
- Comparing different totals is only possible once they are both reduced to a 'per day' or 'per item' basis
